On the 21 September 2023, I went to Ou Meul Oranjezicht, with my husband. We sat down inside the restaurant and after a few minutes no one had come to serve us so we went to the counter to place our orders. It was our 1st visit to Ou meul and we were not sure how they operate. When placing my order at the counter I then told the man who served me that we would be sitting down at a table outside. While waiting for our order I noticed other people coming to the establishment and with in a few seconds of sitting down they were given a menu and were served upon. When my order arrived it was all given to me in takeaway bags and cups. Only then did I realise that I did not look like everyone else there. My husband is Indian and I am a coloured Muslim woman wearing a scarf. All their other customers were waited on almost immediately and were served in glass plates and crockery with cutlery. I had never before experienced such outright racism. I am not one to complain and did not want the beautiful afternoon to be spoilt but with each day that has passed it has upset me more and more to know that people are still treated differently because of the colour of their skin.
