In September 2023, I was contacted by debt collectors regarding NSFAS loan repayments.
I am still a full time student and have never left the institution/ nor failed a single module - I have been doing teaching assistant work to pay for rent and food. I was offered bursaries to subsidise my studies. I have graduated all my degrees with distinction.
Apparently, I have been accruing R500 interest every month based on the debt collectors state of account. This is not what was signed for, I contacted
[email protected] 3 times during this year and only get an email stating that I need to wait 4 to 6 weeks for a response (NSFAS did not respond). I was 2 hours on call on 9 October 2024 to speak to someone at the call centre only for them to tell me I should send an email since they cannot help me.
I am running out of communication channels (I have emailed, I have called, I have been to campus offices, I have contacted the debt collectors, I have contacted NSFAS legal) but was quick to be handed to debt collectors. I don’t want to fight, since there is a clear misunderstanding on NSFAS part that must be sorted for me to pay off the loan.
